What if the test is positive?
A positive result means a polyp or bowel cancer may be present. Everyone who has a positive result should have further tests to find out whether they have bowel cancer. Most will not have the cancer, but a few will, and early diagnosis will greatly improve their chance of cure. Remember that there is a 90% chance of cure if the cancer is found at an early stage.
Your nominated doctor will be advised by our Bowelscan Medical Coordinator within 4 weeks after submitting your sample for pathology.
If your Test is Negative:
This means that there was no blood detected in the specimen submitted. You will be advised directly by mail of negative results 8-10 weeks after submitting your sample for pathology testing, as not all polyps and cancers bleed, and some may do only intermittently, this result means that a significant bowel problem could still be present. For this reason, if you currently have rectal bleeding, alterations of bowel habit or crampy lower abdominal pain or have a family history of bowel cancer, you are strongly advised to consult your local medical practitioner.
Pathology is provided free by: Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology.
If your test is negative, do plan to have another test each year as a step to healthy living.
