What is Bowelscan?Bowelscan is an Annual Rotary Community Service Program conducted throughout many Rotary Districts in Australia, including District 9630 which covers a large area in southern Queensland. Bowelscan is a public awareness program seeking to increase community awareness and knowledge of bowel cancer and its symptoms. People in the community are offered a simple and affordable test kit and they are asked to privately collect small specimens of faeces and place them on a card in the test kit and return it for analysis. Rotary aims to reduce the 5,500 annual deaths from Bowel Cancer in Australia, to improve a person’s life span where possible and to improve the quality of life of those affected and their families. The test kits are sold through participating pharmacies and returned for pathology testing. Kits are on sale in Redlands in March and must be returned for testing by end of April. Bowelscan is a test for invisible blood in the stool, which if present, may indicate a bowel cancer. There may be a cancer present which is not bleeding and which will not show up in one test. However, a significant number of cancers and pre-cancerous conditions do bleed and may lead to an early diagnosis and a more successful treatment. Annual testing is recommended for all men and women over 40. Rotary Clubs and their members are not engaged in the provision of medical advice or medical service to the public, but we do encourage people with bowel disorder to consult their doctor.
